Tips to Prepare for Winter

October 24, 2019

With winter approaching it is very important to not only prepare your family for the season change but to also prepare your home. Ensuring your home is ready for every season is something that should never be surpassed or forgotten.

Getting your furnace ready for the cold Minnesota winter is, and always will be, my number one tip. Hire an HVAC contractor to come to your home and inspect and service your furnace to ensure it is working properly and not putting off CO in to your home. The amount of CO will be tested by your contractor of hire. You and your family will need a furnace that will not only keep your home warm but also safe.

Do you have a fireplace? Wood burning, electric or gas? If you plan to use this during the winter months you want to make sure it is cleaned out and again, working as it should. This is a great opportunity to utilize as a secondary heat source on those days where you want to cozy up in your living room or just enjoy a little extra warmth. There are contractors available that can assist with cleaning out and looking over your fireplace to make sure it is safe to use.

If you have older windows, seal with plastic wrap. Sealing with plastic wrap will help hold the heat in your home without letting it seep through the cracks and crevices in those older windows. Older widows are not sealed as well as newer windows but can certainly be covered to ensure you are getting the most out of your heating bill and will save you money in the long run. It may be a job to put the plastic on all windows but it is worth it in the end.

Do not forget to always clean out your gutters after all the leaves have fallen and prep the exterior of your home also, remove items away from your foundation walls.

Making sure your home is ready for all seasons is so important. It will lessen the chance of issues arising during months where contractors may be very busy. Start now to make it easier on you and your family!
